My 5 Most Worn Pieces for Fall

Top (similar) | Skirt c/o | Tights | Boots (similar) I am definitely a creature of habit when it comes to day-to-day outfits. I love to have a few go-to pieces that I feel bring together almost any piece in my closet. And, obviously, my go-to pieces from season to season change. So far, this Fall, I’ve already found my go-to’s that I can’t stop reaching for! I’m all about a versatile closet with a few neutral pieces that just work (and a few printed pieces too)! My 5 Most Worn Pieces for Fall: 1. Neutral Turtleneck It gets so dang cold here in Toronto and a cozy turtleneck is a definite must! I love having a neutral turtleneck to pair with jeans, trousers, and skirts. And I personally get SO much wear out of my turtlenecks from Fall to Winter, it’s crazy. My tip for having a versatile Fall wardrobe is adding a lot of sweaters and turtlenecks. 2. Plaid Skirt Okay, honestly plaid is a new print for me this season. Crazy, I know. I’ve never been into plaid before. But this Fall I am dying over plaid everything. This plaid mini has been so versatile for me. I’ve worn it during the day, like above, and out for date night with a flirty blouse. It’s just such a great Fall staple. 3. Tights If you’re a cold weather girl you’ll already know that tights are not optional. I’ve already been grabbing for my tights all Fall long. Especially…

Random Life Update!

Top | Jeans | Jacket | Boots (similar) | Purse Hey guys! Happy Wednesday! I feel like it’s been so long since I’ve given you guys a life update. Sometimes it’s just nice to share what’s going on in my life with my blog readers. It’s almost therapeutic to write it out. Especially since these last few months have been such a huge change for me! So where should I start… WORK LIFE: Firstly, life has been HECTIC since Shop Basic Babe has started. Now, SBB isn’t my first business. I owned a children’s store before. But man, is SBB teaching me SO much. I feel like once you own your own business, you kinda feel like you know what you’re doing. But I’m learning I don’t. I’m so thankful I have such a great team helping me with SBB. I am learning soooo much about branding, marketing and really how to make an online business work. And it seriously is more work then I expected. So naive I know. Overall, the online shop has been a hustle but so good at the same time! My blog is getting a facelift – which is much needed! So excited to show you guys the reveal. It was just time to freshen it up and re-brand. I’ve also felt like it was just time. My blog and brand has grown and changed so much in the past year and I really wanted to reflect that! And in other EXCITING news… my husband (who…

3 Guaranteed Ways to Make your Blog (or Instagram) Pictures Better!

Top | Skirt | Jacket | Shoes (similar) | Purse I get asked a lot about my blog and Instagram pictures. From how I edit them to how I get them to look so professional and what camera’s I use. I have an editing guide here if you were wondering about editing. But today’s blog post is how to take the ‘perfect’ picture before editing! So let’s jump right in! 3 Guaranteed Ways to Make your Blog (or Instagram) Pictures Better!: 1. Create a story Don’t just take a picture. Create a story. Use buildings in the background to create interest, depth and height. Take advantage of the way the sunlight is hitting the road or the way it’s hitting your hair. Look at your surroundings and try to make them create a story for either your blog post or Instagram. Create a vibe or a feeling. Nothing is more captivating than an image that creates a story. It’s so easy to take a picture in front of a wall and call it a day. But it’s so much more exciting and inspiring to use your surrounding to help tell the story about your outfit! 2. Capture the candid To really create a story try and capture the candid moments. Nothing shoots better than an authentic walk (vs the fake walk – which rarely looks good). Walk around your shooting location, naturally interact with what’s around you and do your thing. I like to pretend that Qais isn’t there shooting…

Top 5 Mom Jeans

Bodysuit | Jeans | Purse | Boots Happy Wednesday! I have really really recently (like in the past 3 or 4 months) gotten into wearing jeans. Before I started blogging you would literally never catch me in jeans! I guess you could say blogging pushed me outside of my style comfort zone and pushed me to try new styles. And I know that sounds silly for jeans. But, I could never find a pair of jeans I liked before. Now I am almost always in jeans. My go-to styles are the vintage high waist. And, of course, the mom jean. Now I know the mom jean isn’t for everyone, but if you haven’t tried a pair of mom jeans. Do it! They have loose styles and more fitted styles, like above. So that being said I’ve rounded up my favorite mom jeans for Fall/Winter. My preference is more tighter fitting mom jeans so you’ll find more of those below! 🙂 Top 5 Mom Jeans: ASOS Boohoo H&M TopShop ASOS xo Lauren

Top 5 Not-So-Basic Cardigans for Fall

Sweater: Rylee & Cru | Bodysuit: Missguided | Jeans: Zara | Shoes: Sam Edelman | Purse: Foley + Corinna | Hat: H&M | Sunglasses: Forever 21 (similar)   Yay for Friday and for the weekend! I fly out to New York tomorrow for a quick business trip. I love going to New York (and wish I could’ve had my business trip during NYFW) and love how inspired I feel after I leave. Just something about that New York energy makes you want to work harder and achieve more, lol! I’ll probably be bringing this fuzzy cardigan with me on the flight tomorrow. There is nothing better than a big warm cardigan to layer with. It’s such an essential for the colder weather and a staple piece, in my opinion! I went on a purging spree a few months back and gave away ALL of my winter items. Including all my beloved cardigans. So I really need to start shopping for some new sweaters, cardigans and all that good stuff! And although, I am the self-titled Basic Babe. I like my cardigans to have a little bit more edge. So I’ve rounded up my top 5 not so basic cardigans for Fall! Top 5 Not-So-Basic Cardigans for Fall Rylee & Cru ASOS Revolve Forever 21 (NEED!) H&M xo Lauren

Currently Crushing On: Moon River

Dress: Moon River | Purse: H&M | Shoes: Charlotte Russe (similar) | Sunglasses: Ray Ban   Firstly, I just want to mention that this dress in red in person! I tried so hard to ensure the true colour would be visible in the pictures. But, since the dress does have an orange undertone it is appearing more orange then red. But this is a red dress, I promise! Just wanted to throw it out there before some of you guys commented on the fact that it was orange, lol!! One of my favourite things to do, as a fashion lover, is to find new brands! I really do stick to a budget when shopping. But every now and then I try to find a quality brand to ‘splurge’ on. Now I know that everybody has a different idea on how much you have to spend to splurge. Honestly, for me it’s spending over $100 on a piece of clothing. Especially, a piece that is not for any special occasion. That being said, I believe in having a few quality pieces in your closet you can wear for everyday. It just makes you feel better and makes your wardrobe more versatile (in my opinion!). I stumbled across Moon River while looking for my Canada Day dress (told you its red, lol!). I was looking for a chic boho dress that I could wear out after Canada Day celebrations. When I found this dress I completely fell in love! I’ve never heard…

I am so glad it’s finally wrapping up and I’m excited for the next few weeks ahead! Qais and I are putting our house up on the market and downsizing to a condo. We are so excited to be entering into a new season in our life. And we are really looking forward to being close to the city! We’ve lived in suburbia for the past two years and have been talking about moving closer to the city. We just haven’t made the plunge until now!! So pray for us that our house will sell quickly and that we’ll find a pet-friendly condo in the city! Anyways, that’s just a quick update on our life so far! But today’s post is all about my favorite ruffle dresses for the Summer season. I love to have a few cocktail dresses in my wardrobe for any fun Summer parties, weddings and for fancier dinners out. Right now I am really feeling statement dresses and I am in particular loving ruffles! As you probably know, ruffles have made a pretty big comeback this season and you can find them on almost everything! I think ruffles are the perfect girly and flirty accent to really give any piece a fun and bold twist. Just like these sleeves on my dress from Boohoo (which is under $40, by the way!!).…

3 Reasons Why You Should Dress-Up for Day Dates

Dress: ASOS (under $60!) | Shoes: Charlotte Russe (similar) | Purse: H&M | Sunglasses: Aldo (similar) So if you haven’t already noticed, Qais and I are super serious about our weekly dates. We’ve been together for almost 10 years. And we really do believe in the importance of dating your spouse. We usually go on a date night weekly. And we also add in some impromptu day dates after we’re done shooting for the blog. I used to be pretty casual dressing up for day dates. Usually a pair of jeans, sandals or flats and a cute tee or blouse. But since some of our dates are after shooting some looks for the blog, I have become pretty obsessed with dressing for day dates! That being said, here are my 3 reasons why you, girl, should be dressing up for day dates: 1.Because you get major use out of your wardrobe! The great thing about dressing up for day dates is you can pretty much throw anything on from your wardrobe! I love pairing some trousers from work with a cute blouse and sandals. Or a dress with one of my favorite heels (like the pair above). I am a huge believer and having your wardrobe work for you in every way. So it doesn’t hurt to have your work wardrobe “work” for dates too! 2. Because you can play around with some #trendingoutfits I personally don’t play around with trends for date night, for the most part. Especially if…
