How to Style an Oversized Coat

An oversized coat is the ultimate staple to keep you cozy and warm throughout Fall and Winter. But finding the perfect oversized coat is only half the work – the other half is finding out what to wear with it! Oversized fashion can be difficult to style because it tends to overpower the entire outfit and can make you look frumpy. So, I’ve put together 5 tips on how to style an oversized coat

1. It’s all about balance

It is easy for an oversized coat or jacket to make you look like you are wearing a potato sack (in the best possible way). If this isn’t the look you are going for, then balancing out the volume of the coat by wearing slim fitting bottoms is a must. Wearing straight or slim-fitting jeans, leggings or a skirt with tights is a good place to start when styling your oversized coat.

2. Choose the right colour

Single colour coats can be brightened up with the addition of a pop of bright colour or pattern (which is much needed in this Fall gloom). So, why not accessorize your oversized coat with a plaid scarf or take the neon trend into the Fall with a bright beanie? Or take inspiration from Doctor Who and knit yourself a Tom Baker-esque multi-coloured statement piece!

3. Switch it up

Who says you should only own one oversized coat? Fill your Fall wardrobe with multiple oversized coats cause a girl can never have too many! A classic oversized trench coat is a workwear staple during the Fall, but it probably won’t keep you warm enough in the winter. Alas, a cozy oversized fleece or faux fur number might be just the ticket. Of course, if you are buying multiple coats, then you want to make sure you will actually wear them before making the purchase, as currently over 15 million tonnes of textile and fabric are discarded every year in the US alone. It’s a good idea to try to be more eco-conscious in your approach to fashion by not purchasing unnecessary clothing, and passing on old items to thrift stores or try selling them online with Poshmark.

4. Add some femininity (if you want to)

Oversized coats are can be boxy and a bit masculine, as they completely hide your form. Try wearing with a pencil skirt and heels if you want to make it more feminine. Or, you could take your outfit in the opposite direction and rock biker boots (or my fave combat boots here), jeans and a beanie hat for a more edgy look that will keep you toasty warm throughout the winter.

5. Roll your sleeves up

Large coats are a great style piece, but they can be a little inconvenient when the sleeves are drowning your arms. Rolling them up not only makes it easier to hold your coffee or scrolling through Instagram, but it also looks extremely cool. The rolled sleeve look gives off a casual, comfy vibe which can also help transition an oversized coat from winter into spring!
